Yahoo shareholders are going to panic - everybody and their moms are going to suddenly short the stock. I was looking to purchase quite a few shares myself and had the deal gone underway, we would have banked quite nicely.
Seems that the hostility from Microsoft didn’t really work out. At first people thought it was a bluff, but now it’s a dead deal. It’s quite unfortunate. Not sure how the two are going to try to compete against Google now.

Many others may disagree but I see some truth, not just posturing, in Yahoo’s stance about their ability to strongly go it alone in regard to their posited strategic initiatives.

I have had a hard time understanding why nobody has seen Microsoft’s strategy from the beginning. I told anyone who would listen from day one that this offer was the most brilliant corporate chess move I had seen in a long time. If they took the offer, Microsoft would remove a competitive barrier to Google and pick up some good assets in the meantime. Instead, Yahoo’s board turned down the Microsoft offer and took Steve Ballmer’s bait to commit their own corporate suicide (and I think Ballmer knew they would reject it). Between that meeting and Microsoft calling off the deal today, Yahoo jettisoned many key employees and made a host of coorporate deals designed to sabotage the deal. Now they are not only stuck with the results of those bad moves, they also have to face inevitable backlash from the market including shareholder lawsuits and the fun share price plunge on Monday. Microsoft can now sit back and wait to pick up the pieces they want - or get it all - for a song down the road. Say what you want about their software; this is game, set, and match to Microsoft in the most lopsided victory in a long time. Ballmer waited until the right moment and hit them when they were weak with a strategy that would eliminate the Yahoo barrier either way.

The ultimate benefactors here are the consumers. Yahoo! has been floundering and this external stimulus from Microsoft is exactly what they needed to point them in the right direction. They will survive the impending dip in share price and over the next year their new strategy - an embracing of OpenSocial - will make them competitive again. They might even decide to go long term with Google, which totally makes sense given the efficiency and general superiority of Google’s ad platform. At the same time, this will strengthen Microsoft’s resolve as they need to find a new way to confront the 10000 pound gorilla in the room, which isn’t them for a change. I also agree with with the sentiment in the podcast that they aren’t “pussies.” Microsoft may not be able to compete with Google directly, but their OS and office products give them the freedom to try as many strategies, and buy as many companies, as it takes to finally find one that works. Google doesn’t have to do a thing to remain the leader except collect more data. The more data they’ve got, the better their machine learning algorithms work, the more targeted their adverts are and the more conversions they get. It’s silly for Yahoo to try to compete with such an efficient machine in the ad space. Yahoo should focus on developing new content and just show Google’s ads next to it. Tying your success to Google’s is clearly the best business plan in the room.

Sounds like Microsoft wins either way and google has the most to gain.
MS purchases Yahoo - gain market share by acquiring yahoo customers.
MS walks from Yahoo - raises strategy questions with Yahoo customers leaving a choice between google and microsoft… this may dilute yahoo marketshare. It also raises awareness as Microsoft as a better alternative. Perhaps they never actually wanted Yahoo. It certain is cheaper than what they were offering per share.

I am not sure it’s just the online advertising revenue for Microsoft. They need to put themselves firmly in the cloud network scene. There office suites is under profound attack by online companies that are putting out great products like ZOHO’s suite of business softwares etc. As far is Yahoo is concerned they can not only survive but if they attack the Microsoft grip on office productivity tools they are in an excellent position to take advantage of the future possibilities. Not to mention Yahoo could provide the same user interface and institute Google like features to surge forward. I think they need to replace the heads and come up with some great new ideas instead of trying to get bought.

I got my son one of those airsoft guns its fantastic, I was afraid at first that it would hurt his friends when they shot each other. I had to get him this airsoft rifle cause he wanted a BB gun, and yeah that wasnt going to happen.
