@Chris. I think MS will probably do some OutlookWeb style version of Office, but current rich client is not going away. The click, refresh, back, and refresh cycle is too high for production work. I do see it as a great way to share/version documents such as Leases between multiple parties and setting up quick affinity groups for a document. But personally, I don't want to do all my docs in a browser. I would sooner use Notepad.

@Elias: You're so vain, I bet you think this song is about you.

@William: Really? You think Microsoft will let Google Docs go unchallenged on the web document editing/sharing front?

I really enjoyed the part at the end about twitter.

It helps me see the power of it in its core role.
- identity
- news
- affinity (social tie-in)

I usually try to do more, and see more features, but this core element that is portable to all services such as ours for radio, is tremendous.

Jamie quoted:
“..And there’s no indication of that from anybody except the Office and Windows groups… who are about to be put into a large container and thrown food in from the top.”

I found that interesting too as not sure what it meant. If it means Word and Excel are going in browser - I would say not in our life time.

Funny.

Thanks Steve for being the only person with sense that realizes MS, for the most part, bootstraped the INET with WFW and the integrated TCP/IP stack. Those old enouph to remember getting Trumpet Winsock and IPX working in High memory know too well what a pain that was.

Some other thoughts:
- Mesh is not just folders and devices. That is what you "see" today. Under the covers is a deep platform for devs (the core focus).
- Not clear on bad "MS entry points" to tech. Mesh is only in Tech Preview and they already have a busy Forum, multiple blogs and videos and other docs. I don't see where they are making it hard for devs to get info. The darn api is not even beta or public yet. Give me a break.
- If you have not programed in VS yet, then you have no clue what your missing. I don't mean a few minutes and poo it. I mean a whole app.
- What the hell is "open web"? I am so tied of hearing Open all over the place I don't know what it means anymore. How come when google creates some RSS thingy it is "open", but when ms does same, it is "closed"?
- There is no Web3.0. It is the web - period. The web is the hub, the protocols is how push data around the hub.
- Steve, it is true mesh will abstract feeds to muliple devices and that is goodness. However, as I see it, you will still have to create your UX per device needs. Even with a web client, a mobile client will probably be different then your full screen version.
- As I see it, the web of the future is not browser based. As a dev and user, I don't want to be constrained inside a single window. I want rich graphics and animations and non-rectangular windows with occasionally connected abilities (i.e. the Outlook model) using local cache. I think this is where Mesh is designed to play. For example, if Mesh delivers Xaml and blobs to the device, do you even need the browser after install?

Brilliant show Steve, excellent thoughts from all. You should get Chris Messina on more often. Provides an interesting balance.

One thing I have not seen discussed in relation to Android is the Jaiku and GrandCentral acquisitions. They have some very powerful pieces there.
