The Android platform and SDK is far superior than anything out there. The lame excuses made by that Apple demo tool regarding background processes being evil were ridiculous. Push notifications are nowhere close to providing equivalent utility. Apple is just trying to fool us with some slight of hand to cover up the problems with their application model.

Doc is right. Partitioned monolithic apps that cannot inter operate will be perceived as antiquated in the mobile space once we get our hands on component oriented solutions that end users can customize themselves as easy as fitting together lego blocks. Apple cannot get there from here fast enough to retain that facade of superior innovation and ease of use.

The Apple App Store monopoly, the restrictions on what apps will be allowed in, and its 30% tax on users will send developers running to Android-based solutions. Steve Jobs' arrogance will be the undoing of the iPhone. The carriers are just biding their time until they tell Steve to fuck off.

Android is free. The carriers don't do software. They will make more money leveraging Android than by having to put up with all the restrictions that come with partnering with Apple. The studios and other content providers might be losing their traditional distribution channels but the carriers don't have this problem. Their ability to monetize their users by adding additional charges against monthly phone bills is an advantage that trumps any scheme that Apple can try.

I've been watching ATSC DTV for several years now, and see no problem with free, advertiser-supported push streaming wireless digital entertainment, nor does it seem old-fashioned to me. Yes, most broadcasters are now operating on UHF, and will be moving to VHF next February, and coverage patterns will change. But I'll tell you, right now, I get far better DTV reception than we get NTSC reception.

The problems I have with my (2G) iPhone are A. like everyone else, lack of search in Contacts (why can't we assign arbitrary keywords to contacts, BTW?) B. no easy way to turn off data roaming. Foreign carriers will absolutely murder you, C. no internet radio in iTunes. I want to use the iPhone to get Indy Pop Rocks in my car, D. Flash, obviously, but having twisted YouTube's arm, that's unlikely except on Adobe's initiative, D. Preview, so I can read PDF e-books on it, E. too few alternatives to Apple's headset (stereo, special plug, microphone), especially BT, and more trivially, F. Why do podcasts not get updated as listened to on the Mac side?, G. too many steps to dismiss a bad WiFi connection, H. the spelling suggestions are just awful. With a huge percentage of my contacts in LA, why does it not assume when I type "Los" that the next word will be "Angeles" and not "Any", and that's after typing ANG just now, with a couple of thousand contact records. I. it needs private browsing. I've picked up other guy's iPhones and started to type into Safari, and seen suggestions given that their wives should not. They probably don't realize how close they are to disaster :-)

Did anyone mention Palm or Blackberry?

As a phone the Blackberry kicks all the other's asses in my opinion. My 8700 had a far superior call quality and volume compared to the iPhone. The scroll wheel just doesn't work for browsing the web.

Palm should drop it's OS and pick up Android if they haven't already.

All the Beatlemania for the iPhone aside, ANY chance to hear Doc Serles think out loud about what direction these companies are going is a blessing. He continues to be the most insightful, intelligent and well spoken commentator we have on the web. The wealth of his experience raises the bar whenever he appears on the show.

I also enjoy when JC can get out of carnival barker mode and add his 2 cents without Springer-izing the conversation. He can be entertaining and annoying but he's best when he actually digests the question and then answers it.

I think you all missed out the importance of speed, or rather, 'bandwidth utilization'. Not all devices use the available network the same.

I'm in M'sia and have a Blackberry, Nokia N95, O2 Atom Life and a 3.5G modem. They can all access 3G/3.5G from the same operator. The O2 running WM6 is waaaay faster than any of the others. The 3.5G modem is actually the worst!
So say what you like - i need mobility and speed - and the WM6 device delivers it best.
