It is a good thing that Live Mesh is built on open standards. This will facilitate its integration with other systems. That said, the Live Mesh platform is still controlled by a single large corporation. Because of this, many developers will not build applications on top of Live Mesh. If the Live Mesh platform does not provide users and third party systems with compelling applications then it will not matter that third party systems can easily integrate with it.

Even after some attempted clarification I don’t see the point Marc was making with his question to Brett regarding FriendFeed adopting Live Mesh. How would Live Mesh integration add value to FriendFeed and/or its users? Marc seems to feel he can rehabilitate the Borg by integrating them into the mix. In my opinion Microsoft has only paid lip service to the benefits of opening up and giving up some amount of control. Talk is cheap.
