<description>There is health insurance that currently covers thousands of people in this country without regard to pre-existing conditions and is not single-payer. The insured choose the kind of insurance that best meets their needs, whether it's an HMO or Fee-for-Service; high-deductible or low-deductible; ER only or total coverage; high or low co-pay or something else. Premiums are paid partly by the insured and partly by the tax base.

Any insurance company willing and able to meet certain criteria can bid for the business.

Hopefully, the new Administration will be able to extend that collection of health care plans from covering only thousands to covering the millions who, for whatever reason, have no insurance at all. Hopefully it can be extended to those who do have insurance that's just not that good.

Seems to me that would only expand the pool of people insured and lower costs for everyone. I'm sure I must be missing something, or else it would already be available to millions instead of thousands - but what? What am I missing that's preventing this?

Maybe nothing is preventing it except inertia or, put another way, business as usual. Hopefully the incoming Administration can help us all get past that inertia and make it happen. Maybe whatever is standing in the way will see there's no reason to stand in the way and allow it to happen.

I'm sure I must be missing something - but what?
(I wish someone had an answer to that!)
